What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardized test that measures English language proficiency for non-native English speakers. It is widely recognized by educational institutions, employers, and governments worldwide. The test assesses all four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. IELTS results are trusted as a true reflection of one’s ability to communicate in English across all four language skills. The test is available in more than 140 countries, making it accessible to a broad range of candidates.

Difference between British Council and IDP

Both the British Council and IDP are co-owners of IELTS and provide the test, but there are no differences in the test format or scoring. The choice between the two mainly depends on test availability and personal convenience. Some test takers choose based on the locations or the dates available that better suit their schedule. Both organizations ensure the test is administered under strict conditions to maintain its integrity and reliability. Ultimately, the scores from both providers are equally valid and recognized

Find out where IELTS can take you

IELTS opens doors to international education and employment all around the globe. Many universities in English-speaking countries require IELTS scores as part of their admission process. It is also used by governments for immigration purposes and professional bodies for registration and assessment. Preparing for the IELTS can help improve your English skills and increase your chances of success in moving abroad for work or study. The test is designed to reflect how you will use English at study, at work, and at play, in your new life abroad.

Understanding how IELTS testing works

IELTS can be taken on paper or on a computer, depending on the test center. The testing process is designed to measure your English proficiency through practical, everyday content. IELTS tests are known for their fairness and impartiality, conducted under strict surveillance to ensure the integrity of the results. The Speaking test is carried out face-to-face with a certified examiner, which is unique among many English tests. Understanding the test format, practicing sample questions, and improving language skills are key steps in preparation.

Format

The IELTS test format is designed to assess a candidate’s ability in listening, reading, writing, and speaking in English. The test is available in two formats: Paper-based and Computer-delivered. Both formats provide an accurate measure of your language abilities in various contexts and are recognized worldwide by universities, employers, and immigration authorities.

IELTS on Paper
IELTS Computer-delivered

In this traditional test format, candidates are given paper-based materials to complete the Reading, Writing, and Listening sections. This format may appeal to those who prefer handwriting or marking up texts as they analyze them. The Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with an examiner, which adds a personal interaction component to the assessment.

This format allows candidates to take the Listening, Reading, and Writing tests using a computer. The Speaking test remains face-to-face. This format is ideal for those who are more comfortable with typing and navigating through a digital interface. It often provides more frequent test dates and faster results.

Test Types

IELTS offers several test types to cater to different needs, such as academic advancement, immigration, and basic language survival skills in an English-speaking environment.

IELTS
IELTS for UKVI
IELTS Life Skills

This standard test type evaluates English proficiency for higher education or professional reasons. It assesses language skills in a broad range of contexts and is widely accepted globally.

This version is specifically for those who need to prove their English language skills as part of their application to live, work, or study in the United Kingdom. The test format and content are the same as the regular IELTS, but it is taken at a UKVI-approved test center.

Aimed at people who need to demonstrate their speaking and listening skills at levels A1 or B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). It is usually required for family, spouse, or partner visa applications within the UK.

Test Sections

IELTS assesses proficiency in four language skills through different sections, which can be taken on paper or a computer.

Computer-delivered sections
Paper-based sections
    • Writing: Candidates type responses to questions, which typically involve summarizing, describing, or explaining information.
    • Listening: Test-takers answer questions on a computer as they listen to recordings of native English speakers.
    • Reading: Participants read digital texts and respond to various question types.
    • Speaking: The speaking section is conducted face-to-face with a certified examiner to assess verbal communication skills.
    • Writing: Responses are handwritten, allowing test-takers to structure essays and letters on paper.
    • Listening: Answers are written down as candidates listen to recordings.
    • Reading: Test-takers engage with printed texts and complete different types of questions.
    • Speaking: This component is similar to the computer-delivered format, involving a live conversation with an examiner.

Modules

The choice between IELTS modules depends on the test taker’s goals, whether they are applying for higher education, professional registration, or for immigration purposes.
